France calls on residents to evacuate the West African nation urgently following militant gasoline embargo

France has released an urgent advisory for its people in Mali to depart as quickly as possible, as Islamist insurgents continue their embargo of the state.

The Paris's external affairs department recommended nationals to depart using aviation transport while they continue operating, and to avoid surface transportation.

Energy Emergency Worsens

A recently imposed gasoline restriction on Mali, established by an al-Qaeda-aligned faction has overturned daily life in the capital, Bamako, and additional areas of the enclosed West African country - a former French colony.

France's announcement came as the global shipping giant - the largest global transport corporation - revealing it was suspending its services in the country, mentioning the embargo and worsening safety.

Insurgent Actions

The militant faction Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has created the blockage by assaulting tankers on major highways.

The country has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are delivered by highway from bordering nations such as Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire.

International Response

Recently, the US embassy in Bamako stated that non-essential diplomatic staff and their families would leave the nation during the crisis.

It said the gasoline shortages had impacted the power availability and had the "potential to disrupt" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "unpredictable ways".

Leadership Background

Mali is presently governed by a military leadership headed by Gen Assimi Goïta, who first seized power in a government overthrow in recent years.

The junta had public approval when it assumed control, committing to handle the protracted safety emergency caused by a separatist rebellion in the northern region by ethnic Tuaregs, which was subsequently taken over by Islamist militants.

Foreign Deployment

The international peace mission and French forces had been deployed in recent years to deal with the growing rebellion.

Each have departed since the junta took over, and the security leadership has hired Russian mercenaries to address the safety concerns.

Nevertheless, the militant uprising has persisted and extensive regions of the northern and eastern territories of the state continue away from official jurisdiction.
